Important details about the next James Bond movie emerged this week, with the announcement that Denis Villeneuve would be the director of the next installment. A lot has happened since the last movie in the series, NO TIME TO DIE, which was released in 2021.
MGM Studios, the studio holding rights to the James Bond franchise, was acquired by Amazon in 2022. Earlier this year, the intellectual property rights to James Bond were also purchased by Amazon, after a lengthy and occasionally contentious negotiation with Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson, the producers who had controlled the franchise for decades through their production company NEON Productions.
The selection of Villeneuve as the director of the next film is the first indication of how Amazon MGM Studios intends to manage the Bond franchise. While some worried that Amazon would go too far in commercializing the James Bond brand, with the effect of cheapening its reputation. However, Villeneuve is widely regarded as one of the best directors working in Hollywood today, credited with having led the DUNE franchise to both financial success and critical praise.
In their statement announcing Villeneuve as the director of the next Bond movie, Amazon also emphasized the primary importance of the “theatrical experience,” a sign that the studio intends to lean into the big-screen spectacle experience.
