25th-Anniversary Celebration of THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival
The 2026 Cannes Film Festival opened this week amid growing concern about Hollywood’s increasingly tentative relationship with major international film festivals. For the first time in nearly a decade, there are no major movie premieres from the large Hollywood studios at Cannes, marking a dramatic shift from prior years when Cannes was seen as a global launchpad for high-profile movies such as TOP GUN: MAVERICK (2021), ELVIS (2022) and KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON (2023). One possible reason is a concern that studios feel about the impact on box office that a negative early reaction at festivals can have on these big-budget movies. The 2023 premieres of Disney’s INDIANA JONES AND THE DIAL OF DESTINY and ELEMENTAL at Cannes were both greeted with a less-than-flattering critical response, perhaps contributing to less-than-hoped-for box office results.
This year’s festival is centered on internationally-financed genre and auteur-driven films, with their domestic theatrical releases being handled by indie distributors like NEON, MUBI and A24.
At the same time, other major festivals are actively adjusting to broader industry changes. The Sundance Film Festival is preparing for its upcoming relocation to Boulder, Colorado beginning in 2027, with organizers emphasizing expanded theatre infrastructure and a renewed focus on preserving the communal theatrical experience for independent film. Sundance leadership has framed the move as part of a larger effort to adapt festivals for a changing entertainment landscape where streamers, independent distributors, and boutique theatrical releases are playing a larger role in an ecosystem that was once dominated by major studios. Together, the shifts at Cannes and Sundance reflect a broader restructuring of the theatrical marketplace, where independent distributors and festival-driven films are becoming increasingly important suppliers of prestige theatrical content even as the major studios pull back from the traditional festival circuit.
