STAR WARS: THE MANDALORIAN AND GROGU Opens in Theatres on May 22
THE MANDALORIAN AND GROGU has become one of the most closely watched theatrical releases of the year, carrying the burden of reviving the STAR WARS franchise at the box office after years of uneven performances and streaming overexposure. In recent years, Disney has struggled to keep STAR WARS as a premium theatrical brand while at the same time using it to drive Disney+ subscriptions.
Unlike previous theatrical Star Wars movies, THE MANDALORIAN AND GROGU is effectively an extension of a streaming television property, creating considerable uncertainty about its box office ceiling. Disney appears to be deliberately lowering expectations for the movie release, setting the bar for its success below the one-billion-dollar grosses associated with traditional STAR WARS movies. Disney will be pleased to bring a reasonably large audience back to theatres after a seven-year absence since THE RISE OF SKYWALKER in 2019.
Early reaction to the film appears positive, with Disney showing the opening 17 minutes of the movie for theatre owners at this year’s CinemaCon conference in early April. Many described it as refreshingly action-oriented, marking a return to the franchise’s roots. The stakes are high, with the success of the new release establishing the future theatrical direction of the entire STAR WARS franchise.
