Since movie theatres suffered the pandemic-induced nationwide shutdowns of 2020 and 2021, the industry has been hoping for a year of sustained recovery at the box office. Since then, there have been a handful of good stretches following the release of key titles such as TOP GUN MAVERICK IN 2021 and the BARBIE/OPPENHEIMER phenomenon of 2023. Unfortunately, these successes have turned out to be temporary upturns followed by prolonged droughts at the box office.
But now comes 2026, which has produced a steady and sustained recovery in moviegoing, fueled by the regular releases of appealing new movies throughout the year. In fact, 2026 is well on its way towards becoming the highest-grossing year at the box office since 2019, outperforming 2025 by 10% or more.
In the headline story of the September issue of Bloomberg Businessweek, media columnists Lucas Shaw and Thomas Buckley suggest the key takeaways from the current box office success. Their points were informed by numerous interviews with studio heads, filmmakers, and entertainment industry analysts. They include encouraging signs of an increase in moviegoing attendance by younger audiences, the appeal of IP from the early aughts, interest in and availability of Premium Large Format presentation, and the studios coalescing around a 45-day exclusive theatrical window for new releases. While studios and exhibitors must contend with the risks of franchise fatigue and a persistent decline in attendance when compared with the pre-COVID era, recent trends are clearly showing an important role for theatrical releasing in the entertainment landscape.
