The release of Paramount Picture’s EBENEZER marks a comeback for Johnny Depp, as it’s the first film from a major studio in over a decade to feature the leading man in a starring role. Early results indicate that audiences are receptive to seeing Johnny Depp back on the big screen. Over the past few weeks, the film has been stepping through an initial set of test screenings, and audiences are giving Depp high marks for his portrayal of Ebenezer Scrooge. In fact, Depp’s performance was the best-rated element of the film, with Depp receiving praise above and beyond the film itself.
This opens up intriguing possibilities for Depp and any studio willing to work with him. Depp’s film output has slowed to a crawl over the past decade as the star was enmeshed in a host of personal and legal drama. However, Depp now has two more films scheduled for release in the near future, an action thriller from Lionsgate called DAY DRINKER scheduled to hit theatres in March 2027 and a new PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN sequel from producer Jerry Bruckheimer that is reported to be in development. With many older stars commanding the top billing in new films, it would seem that Depp is positioning himself for a comeback to the silver screen.
