Plot Summary
- A group of college kids - Allison (Katrina Bowden), Chad (Jesse Moss), Chloe (Chelan Simmons), Chuck (Travis Nelson), Jason (Brandon Jay McLaren), Naomi (Christie Laing), Todd (Alex Arsenault), Mitch (Adam Beauchesne), and Mike (Joseph Allan Sutherland) - go on a camping trip in Appalachia mountains, West Virginia. Two lovable West Virginian hillbillies Tucker (Alan Tudyk) & Dale (Tyler Labine), have recently bought an abandoned lakefront cabin in the woods. They are headed to their "fixer-upper" vacation cabin to drink some beer, do some fishing', and have a good time. They run into a group of preppy college kids (including 3 beautiful girls) who assume from their looks that they must be in-bred, chainsaw wielding killers. The group had pulled into a gas station to buy beer, and Tucker & Dale were already there. Dale is attracted to Allison but has an inferiority complex. He says that Allison looks like a college girl, while guys like him only fix toilets for girls like her.On Tucker's advice, Dale tries to talk to Allison, but his appearance (he was holding a scythe and looked like the Grim Reaper) and nervous behavior (Tucker had told him to smile and laugh the whole time) frighten her and her friends. Now Dale & Tucker had invested their life savings in buying the vacation home. When they got there it was a dump & looked like a serial killer had previously lived there, bones hanging & newspaper clippings everywhere. But to our simpletons, it was a mansion, & they were very happy. While Tucker and Dale repair their cabin, Chad tells the group about the "Memorial Day Massacre", a hillbilly attack that took place 20 years prior. In that story, a lone hillbilly attacked a group of vacationing teenagers in the woods and killed every one of them. Chad says that only one person lived to tell the story, and the bodies of the teenagers are buried beneath them in the same woods.Chad is actually a psycho and takes pleasure in freaking out his friends. Chad has a crush on Allison, but she does not feel about Chad the same way.The bunch goes skinny dipping & Allison finds Tucker & Dale fishing & assumes they are stalking & panics, hits her head & falls unconscious. Tucker & Dale pick her & others assume that they are kidnapping her. The next day Allison is found with Dale & finds that they are harmless. Dale makes her pancakes for breakfast. When Allison freaks out, Dale assumes that it is the pancakes and makes her bacon and eggs instead and serves it with flowers.Dales says that they were not spying and were only at the lake for fishing. Dale says that they tried to get her friends attention, but they all ran off and that is why they brought her to the cabin, hoping that they would come the next morning to pick her.Meanwhile, her friends think about rescuing her. As one of them approaches the cabin, Tucker accidentally hits a beehive with his chainsaw & comes out running, the gang thinks he is chasing them & run. Believing he is attacking them, the group scatters, and Mitch accidentally impales himself on a fallen tree branch.Chad stops anyone from calling the police. After finding Mitch's body and concluding he was murdered, Chad persuades the others that they are in a battle for survival.Still Chuck leaves to get the police. The remaining attack the cottage again. Dale & Allison are digging an outhouse out front & the guys mistake it as her digging her own grave and attack. However, Todd impales himself on a spear he brought, Mike dives into a wood-chipper while attempting to tackle Tucker, and Allison gets knocked out by Dale's shovel. As Dale takes her inside, Tucker assumes the group are part of a suicide pact and dissuades Dale from calling the police for fear that they will be accused as murderers.Chuck gets the Sheriff Gurr (Philip Granger) & he arrives when Dale & Tucker are taking the body out of the chipper. Dale & Tucker explain & say that Allison can testify. Sherrif steps inside the house. One of wooden beams is loose & hits the sheriff in the head. The wooden beam had nails inside and Sherrif dies instantly.Chuck gets his gun, but only manages to shoot himself.Chad returns, taking the hillbillies' dog Jangers hostage. Tucker rescues Jangers, but gets captured by Chad, who tortures him and cuts off two of his fingers to lure out Dale. Dale leaves to save Tucker while Chad and Naomi try to rescue Allison. She explains what happened, but they accuse her of having Stockholm syndrome.Tucker and Dale return before Allison leads everyone in a calm discussion, during which Chad reveals his grandmother told him his father died in the Memorial Day Massacre while his mother was the sole survivor. Jason and Chloe break in to save Allison, but a fire breaks out.In the ensuing chaos, Tucker, Dale, and Allison escape; Naomi, Chloe, and Jason are killed; and Chad is injured, disfigured, and becomes mentally unhinged. The trio try to escape in the hillbillies' truck, but crash. An injured Tucker tells Dale Chad took Allison to an old sawmill, where Chad threatens to kill her for "going hillbilly" unless she becomes his girlfriend. However, Dale arrives and rescues her. While barricading themselves upstairs, they find newspaper clippings revealing Chad's father was one of the hillbillies responsible for the Memorial Day Massacre. While Chad is distracted by the revelation, Dale throws a box of chamomile tea at him, causing him to have an asthma attack and fall out of a window to his apparent death.Three days later, the police and a news crew arrive at the cabin, concluding the deaths appeared to be part of a suicide pact and a deranged killer, Chad, who survived and kills the news crew. Elsewhere, Tucker convalesces at a hospital while Dale goes bowling with Allison. While there, Dale encourages a fellow hillbilly to talk to some girls, leading to a new misunderstanding while Dale and Allison confess their feelings for each other and kiss.
