Plot Summary

On a stormy night, a robin's nest is blown away in gusty winds and its eggs rolls down the tree, travels through the jungle and hatches in front of house of a family of mice. The malicious cat (Gillian Anderson) was about to attack when Dad mouse brought the new Hatchling into the house and saved its life. The robin bird sees the mouse as it hatches and assumes the Dad to be her father too. Since the robin is little and alone, Dad mouse allows her to stay in his home. The mouse house is an underground lair, which is accessed by a hole on the surface, which is disguised by human garbage.The robin bird named Robin (Bronte Carmichael) grows up from being raised by a family of mice which includes Dad (Adeel Akhtar) & brothers Dink (Amira Macey-Michael), Flynn (Endeavour Clutterbuck), Pip (Tom Pegler) & Flin (Megan Harris). Robin grows up to be a mouse and not a bird. Nobody has taught her how to fly and as such she is not aware of her flight capabilities.Her differences become more apparent every time they try to sneak into a Who-Man's (human's) house. Robin is very awkward on her feet and is clumsy and makes a lot of noise, while the mice are sneaky and hide themselves very well. The mice are always looking for small portions of stale food, while Robin wants to steal a whole sandwich that she can eat in luxury. Dad mouse teaches his kids to find a secret entrance to the Who-Man's house and to keep their eyes open while they are inside. They are to tip toe around the house to the kitchen and whisper every single word. The most important thing is to never leave a trace as Who-Mans are very picky about whom they allow into the house, and the presence of mice makes them set up traps or even keep a cat as a pet to catch and kill the mice.The time she tries to be bold and steal a sandwich, she makes too much and noise (when a spoon is launched into the air and it clatters into a coffee mug with a loud sound) and attracts the attention of a female who-man, who screams at the sight of a mouse in her kitchen.By experience the mice know that the house will now be protected against them (traps or cats) and cross it off their map. Many such houses are crossed out similarly. The family has very little food to sustain themselves and the kids blame Robin for their misfortune. The family has to live off tea bags and Robin's brothers are already sick of it. Robin is distraught at being responsible for her family's misfortune and decides to address it.Robin ventures out at night, alone, to get some food from the last house, which is not crossed out yet. On her way she crosses a patch of wood where she finds a Magpie. Robin stops to ask for directions, but the Magpie was in no mood to talk.Robin is attacked by a cat, and she runs away. She meets a Magpie (Richard E. Grant), who says Robin is a bird and can fly away. Magpie lives next to a who-man house and says they always have loads of food due to the magic shiny wishing star (the star on top of a Christmas tree). With the star the Who-Mans wish for "things" that make them happy.Now, she sets off on a daring heist to steal a shiny star and to prove to her family, and a malicious cat, that she can be a really good mouse. Magpie and Robin break into the Who-Man house, but both are bad sneakers and make a lot of noise, waking up the Who-man lady. Robin is about to be captured, when goaded by Magpie, she starts flapping her wings and learns to fly. She escapes with the magic star. But she only manages to crash into the outhouse where the malicious cat stays. The cat attacks Robin, but Magpie comes to the rescue and manages to set fire to the outhouse. The Magpie and Robin escape the cat.Robin wishes that she wasn't a bird, but a real mouse. She is disappointed when the next day, the wish doesn't come true. The next morning Robin's family comes looking for her. They all hide in the Magpie's house when the cat attacks. The cat breaks into the house and is about to kill everyone when the Robin starts singing. She attracts the cat's attention and lures it outside. On the weak branch, the cat falls into the water stream below when the branch breaks, and the Robin flies away.Robin finally accepts that she is a bird and sucks at sneaking. She cannot be a great mouse. Going forward, Robin uses her sneakiness to attract attention to herself, while the others go in and steal the bread crumbs.

Storyline

When her egg fortuitously rolls into a rubbish dump, Robin is raised by a loving family of mice. As she grows up, her differences become more apparent. Robin sets off on the heist to end all heists to prove to her family that she can be a really good mouse but ends up discovering who she really is. On a stormy night, Robin's shiny little egg wobbles and falls off the branch of a tall tree. Eventually, the lucky bird finds her way into the humble but safe burrow of compassionate Dad Mouse, and little by little, Robin learns the ropes and becomes one of the family. However, try as she might, Robin will never be as good as her mouse-brothers. So, to prove her worth, optimistic Robin makes a wish upon a Christmas star, and off she goes on the adventure of a lifetime in unknown, peril-laden territories. But will Robin, the feathery mouse, ever realise that birds can fly? — Nick Riganas
