Cooper Hoffman (birthname: Cooper Alexander Hoffman) is the son of the late, great actor Philip Seymour Hoffman, and has established himself as a distinctive actor on theater screens in his own right, making a memorable first impression in the co-lead role of Paul Thomas Anderson’s rollicking comedy-drama, Licorice Pizza (2021), co-starring Alana Haim, Sean Penn, Tom Waits, Bradley Cooper, Benny Safdie, with lead producers MGM/Focus Features/Bron Creative and distributors United Artists Releasing (U.S.)/Universal Pictures (International), grossing a poor $33.3 million on $40 million costs but nabbing three Oscar nominations including Best Picture, Director and Screenplay.
Hoffman was cast in a supporting role by director/co-writer/producer Ethan Hawke for his dramatization of a portion of the life and work of author Flannery O’Connor, Wildcat (2023), co-starring Maya Hawke, Rafael Casal, Philip Ettinger, Steve Zahn, and Laura Linney, launching at the Telluride Film Festival and released by Oscilloscope Laboratories.
Hoffman had his name above the title, alongside co-stars Christoph Waltz and Lucy Liu, for the action comedy Old Guy (2024), directed by Simon West and released by distributor The Avenue. Then Hoffman was cast to portray legendary NBC Sports producer Dick Ebersol in the sprawling ensemble of Saturday Night (2024), director/co-writer/producer Jason Reitman’s comedy about the invention of NBC’s Saturday Night Live, with Gabriel LaBelle, Rachel Sennott, Cory Michael Smith, Ella Hunt, Dylan O’Brien, Finn Wolfhard, Nicholas Braun, Willem Dafoe, Matthew Rhys and J.K. Simmons, premiering at the Telluride Film Festival, but losing money for Sony Pictures/Columbia Pictures with a $10 million return on a $30 million budget.
Hoffman starred in director/producer Francis Lawrence’s long-awaited version of Stephen King’s 1979 dystopian horror novel, The Long Walk (2025), co-starring David Jonsson, Garrett Wareing, Joshua Odjick, Tut Nyuot, Charlie Plummer, Ben Wang, Judy Greer, and Mark Hamill, produced by Vertigo Entertainment and released widely by Lionsgate. Cooper Hoffman kept up his busy schedule, signing up to be co-lead with Andrew Barth Feldman and Leslie Mann in the relationship comedy, Poetic License (2025), with Nico Parker and Method Man under the direction of Maude Apatow in her debut, and premiering at the Toronto Film Festival.
Hoffman then joined the colorful ensemble of director/co-writer/producer/editor Gregg Araki’s erotic thriller, I Want Your Sex (date to be announced), with Olivia Wilde, Charli XCX, Daveed Diggs, Mason Gooding, Chase Sui Wonders, Johnny Knoxville, Margaret Cho, and Roxane Mesquida, and produced by Black Bear Pictures. Hoffman co-starred in the Connecticut-set crime drama, The Trashers (date to be announced), co-starring David Harbour and Olivia DeJonge, under Cooper Raiff’s direction, written by Adam R. Perlman, and produced by Tom McNulty and Andrew Morrison.
Cooper Hoffman was born and raised in New York City by his parents, the late actor Philip Seymour Hoffman and producer and costume designer, Mimi O’Donnell. Hoffman has two sisters, Tallulah and Willa.
