Now owned and operated by 69-year-old Baltimore native and film enthusiast Michael Eugene Johnson, the theater occupies a historic venue first opened in 1938. Formerly known as Next Act Cinema, the space has been revitalized under Johnson’s leadership to celebrate both new releases and timeless classics, with a focus on independent, African American, and locally themed films. Featuring two intimate screening rooms with 45 seats each, Pikes Studio Cinema offers a unique moviegoing experience enhanced by reclining seats, traditional concessions, and the option to enjoy food from nearby restaurants. Johnson, a former theater operator and city activist, sees the cinema as a hub for culture, connection, and community, aligning with broader efforts to revitalize Downtown Pikesville.
