The Stanford Theatre Foundation is dedicated to bringing back the authentic moviegoing experience of Hollywood’s Golden Age. Classic Hollywood directors never intended you to watch their movies on a small screen in your living room. The magic of the movies depends on experiencing them as larger-than-life images on a big screen, and sharing the reactions of a large audience.
The Stanford Theatre first opened in 1925, and it served for decades as Palo Alto’s premier movie house. Many classic films played here on their initial Palo Alto runs. Today the theatre specializes in playing films produced between 1910 and 1970. Our seasonal programs are often film festivals for various genres, directors, and actors, such as Alfred Hitchcock, Bette Davis, and Cary Grant. The Stanford Theatre frequently accounts for as much as twenty-five percent of all classic film attendance in the United States.
