Rooftop Films is a Brooklyn-based nonprofit and one of New York City’s most beloved cultural institutions, dedicated to building community through the power of independent cinema. For nearly 30 years, it has hosted the annual Rooftop Films Summer Series, transforming rooftops, parks, and piers across all five boroughs into vibrant open-air theaters. With a mission to engage communities, Rooftop Films not only showcases daring, resonant work by emerging filmmakers, but also supports them through grants, equipment rentals, and year-round programming. By combining film screenings with live music, curated short film mixtapes, community dialogue, and unforgettable after-parties, Rooftop Films creates one-of-a-kind cinematic experiences that are as much about connection as they are about art. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, it reinvests in the filmmaking ecosystem, providing over $2.3 million in filmmaker support to date, and helping launch the careers of directors. Rooftop Films continues to inspire, uplift, and unite New Yorkers through the transformative magic of storytelling under the stars.
