The Isla Vista Theater, formerly known as the Magic Lantern Theater, is a beloved cultural hub located in Isla Vista, California, closely tied to UC Santa Barbara. Operated by Magic Lantern Films, the theater continues a long-standing tradition of screening critically acclaimed, independent, and cult classic films. With movies shown every Monday and Thursday during the school year and Friday nights in the summer, the venue offers free admission for UCSB students and $6 tickets for the general public. The theater comprises two screening rooms—a large 525-seat auditorium and a smaller 146-seat space—connected by a shared lobby and an inviting outdoor courtyard. Beyond films, the theater transforms into a vibrant event space at night, hosting a wide array of performances, including variety shows, acapella concerts, and dance events. Managed by Isla Vista Arts, a UCSB-affiliated organization promoting student and community creativity, the theater also ties into academic programming like Film and Media Studies 119, giving students hands-on experience in film curation and event production.
