The Bob Hope Theatre, formerly known as the Fox California Theatre, is a stunningly restored 1930s movie palace and a cherished cultural landmark in downtown Stockton, California. Originally opened in 1930 and known for its grand architecture—including a two-story rotunda, a circular mezzanine, and seating for over 2,000 guests—the theater quickly became the entertainment centerpiece of the city. After falling into disrepair and closing in the 1970s, the building was rescued and placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. In 2000, it was donated to the City of Stockton, and after an extensive renovation led by local advocates and donors, it reopened in 2004 as the Bob Hope Theatre, honoring the legendary entertainer. Today, the theater hosts a variety of live performances, concerts, and film screenings, including a monthly Classic Movie Series presented by the Friends of the Fox, a nonprofit group dedicated to preserving its legacy. The venue features beautifully restored interiors, a 1928 Robert Morton pipe organ that accompanies silent films, and accessibility amenities such as wheelchair access and assisted listening devices. Revered as Stockton’s “Crown Jewel,” the Bob Hope Theatre continues to serve as a vibrant hub for arts, history, and community engagement.
