Plot Summary
- Five years after the first film, Lou Dorchen (Rob Corddry), Nick Webber (Craig Robinson), and Jacob (Clark Duke) have led their lives to fame, but each struggling with their self-esteem. Lou is part of a successful band (The Rolling Stones) and married to Kelly and has created the most forward-looking technology company in the world named Lougle. Nick has written the most hit songs (which are basically songs that would be written in the future, but Nick already has knowledge of it due to his time machine trip). Jacob still has a strained relationship with his father Lou. Adam Yates (John Cusack) wrote a best-selling novel titled "Jacuzzi Timelords" and then went off on an experiential journey. Gary (Jason P. Jones) is their high school friend.Lou brags his success to his employee Brad (Kumail Nanjiani). Brad is Lougle's head of R&D and is worried about the state of the firm. Lou tells Brad that Nitrotrinadium mixed in a bathtub, is the recipe for time travel, and the next big idea for Lougle. Nick's wife Courtney (Kellee Stewart) complains about Nick going wherever he wants, whereas Jacob shows hatred for Lou.Lou hosts a party where he declines an offer by old schoolmate Gary Winkle to buy a piece of property that he is representing. Gary Winkle was left behind when the guys took the last hot tub trip & is angry ever since. Lou forces Jacob to act as a butler. Jacob tries to score with the coat check girl Sophie, who pushes back on him.However, Lou is shot in the penis, urging Jacob and Nick to take him to the hot tub time machine (Lou stole the time machine without telling his friends and even got Nitrotrinadium from the Russians), in hopes to find and stop Lou's killer. Lou says that he only saw a person wearing a Tuxedo taking a shot at him.When the guys wake up, they find themselves ten years into the future, where Jacob suggests they are in an alternate time-line (as they have landed on March 25th, 2025), deducing Lou's killer is from the future. Jacob's portrait is on the walls of Lou's home, and this irks him. The future has self-driving cars, Neil Patrick Harris is the President and Dame Jennifer Lawrence is doing a biopic on Meryll Streep. When the guys look in the mirror, they can see themselves how they look 10 years into the future. Jacob is bald, Lou is scraggy, while Nick looks distinguished.The coat check girl from the party 10 years ago is roaming naked in Jacob's house and kisses him. Lou and Nick are getting ready when Nick sees that Lou still has the "Cincinnati" box, which he claims has the Declaration of Independence with a map on the back.The Hot Tub Repairman (Chevy Chase) shows up and says that the Hot Tub doesn't take you where you want to go, but it takes you where you need to go. He also says that Nitrotrinadium has not been invented yet in this alternate time-line. The Repairman indicates that someone from the future will go back in time to kill Lou.They approach their old friend Adam Yates' home, deducing him as the killer when they noticed Adam's coat next to the hot tub time machine. Adam had the motivation to kill Lou as Lou tried to have sex with Adam's wife. They meet his son Adam Yates-Steadmeyer (Adam Scott). Adam Yates's mother is Adam's ex-girlfriend Jenny Steadmeyer who became pregnant with him in 1986 before she broke up with Adam. The guys explain the situation to Adam Yates. Adam Yates-Steadmeyer is about to get married to his fiance Jill (Gillian Jacobs) in a week & doesn't know where his father Adam is as his mother never looked for him. The gang takes Adam Steadmeyer along to look for Adam.In this future, Nick has fallen on hard times and is now poor. Also, Nick and Courtney have broken up. Here, when you need a car, a smart, self-driving car shows up. The car has feelings and Lou is enraged when the car Revs up in front of him. Lou punches the car and decides to walk instead. The car requests for permission to kill the human called Lou. The permission is granted later that night.When Lou spots Gary Winkle, thinking Gary was the killer, he runs in and tackles Gary, but finds out that Lou not buying the land actually made Gary turn a profit. Hurricane Beth destroyed half the waterfront and turned his worthless land into a goldmine.Gary invites them to his nightclub, where they party all night. They even give a psychedelic drug to Adam Jr. which makes him trip all night and he even calls Jill in a drug induced haze. The next morning Adam Jr. calls Jill again and talks about how he kissed a woman and punched a guy. He feels that his life till now was a lie, which alarms Jill. They then are picked up to go to Choozy Doozy, with Nick as the special guest. During the game, after Lou suggests that Nick has sex with a man, he himself is chosen to participate. But, at the last-minute Lou gets a lifeline and switches with Adam Jr. instead, with Jill, Adam Jr.'s fiance, watching the show on TV. Outside the studio, the car tries to run down Lou, but misses narrowly.This frustrates Jacob to leave the group and returns to Gary's club, only to find out how similar he is to Lou. Meanwhile Adam Jr OD's on the drugs he took & foams at the mouth & has to be taken to the hospital by Lou & Nick. At the hospital Lou meets his wife Kelly (Collette Wolfe) (who is a health-care professional) & finds that they are divorced now as Lou never paid any attention to Kelly.Jacob returns to Gary's nightclub and gets high on drugs. His coat check girlfriend Sophie calls Jacob a loser and leaves him. The group find Jacob attempting to jump off the roof of his mansion. Lou and Jacob soon make amends. The guys see a news report on Brad for inventing Nitrotrinadium, the ingredient for the hot tub time machine, and believe Brad is the killer. At Adam Jr.'s wedding, Jill is too angry for what Adam Jr. has done on TV and spots Lou. They have sex, which Adam Jr. accidentally walks in on. Jacob finds Brad but realizes he's not the killer but rather went to find his own success.They find out that Adam Jr. stole the Nitrotrinadium and went back to the past, revealing him as the killer. Adam Jr wanted to kill Lou as he saw Lou having sex with Jill on their wedding day. They return to the mansion, but are too late to stop Adam Jr. As the guys sit in hopelessness, Jacob realizes that because the Nitrotrinadium is in the past, it now exists in the future. They find a vial and place it in the hot tub time machine to return to 2015. They stop Adam Jr. from shooting Lou after Lou apologizes to him.Following this, Nick apologizes to Courtney as Lou tells his wife Kelly he wants to start over. Adam Jr. meets Jill for the first time as Jacob approaches Sophie (Bianca Haase), his future girlfriend, and convinces her to join him in a relationship. As the four return to the hot tub again, Lou's head is shot off by Adam. Then Patriot Lou appears from the 1700s and invites them to "make America happen," and the others agree and take another dip in the hot tub.During the closing credits, the guys are seen exploiting the time machine to change history until the time machine takes them back to the 80s where they again have a second chance to repair time and their mistakes during their travels.
Storyline
- When Lou gets killed, Nick and Jacob fire up the hot tub time machine to get back to the past, but they inadvertently land in the future with Adam Jr. Now they have to alter the future in order to save the past, which is really the present. — Movie Guy Five years after the events of the first film, Lou Dorchen and Nick Webber have become rich and famous, with Lou becoming a multi-billionaire and Nick being a successful music singer. At Lou's celebratory party, Lou is shot in the groin. Jacob (Lou's son) and Nick drag him to the hot tub time machine and activate it to travel back in time to find and stop the killer. When they awaken they find themselves ten years in the future, where Jacob is in charge of Lou's mansion. After determining that they are in an alternate time-line where Lou's killer is from this future, they go to their friend Adam Yates's home, only to meet his son Adam Yates Stedmeyer (Adam Jr.) who is engaged to a girl named Jill..
