Summaries

Plot Summary

The Expendables, led by Barney Ross (Sylvester Stallone) and formed by Lee Christmas (Jason Statham), Gunnar Jensen (Dolph Lundgren), and Toll Road (Randy Couture), extract former member Doctor Death (Wesley Snipes), a knives specialist and team medic, during his transfer to a military prison in Denzali on a train. The Expendables attack the train from a helicopter, drawing all the guards to the top of the train. The guards are then taken out by a steel wire strung across the tracks further ahead. Ross drops his men on the train, who rescue Doc from his cage. Before leaving, Doc takes control of the armored train engine and rams it into the prison, before jumping on the helicopter at the very last second.They recruit Doc to assist them in intercepting a shipment of bombs meant to be delivered to a warlord in Somalia. Doc reveals that the Expendables started with 5 members and expanded to 22 and is disappointed that the group has now reduced to just 4 men. Ross has kept the tags of all the men who died serving the Expendables, as a reminder for his fallen brothers.Arriving in Somalia, they reunite with Hale Caesar (Terry Crews), who arranges a rubber boat to take them to the drop point which is in one section of the Port of Mogadishu. Doc takes control of a crane and moves the Expendables into position using a container attached to the crane. The bomb is brought in by Helicopter.Ross is surprised to find out that the arms trader providing the bombs is Conrad Stonebanks (Mel Gibson), a disgraced former co-founder of the Expendables who went rogue and was presumed dead. In the ensuing firefight, The Expendables kill all but Stonebanks, and make their way through the port, escaping waves upon waves of armed Somali militia. Stonebanks pursues them on his helicopter and shoots Caesar with a long-range rifle. The Expendables are forced to retreat when Stonebanks drops a bomb on them from his helicopter, and Caesar is severely injured.Back at the United States, CIA operative Max Drummer (Harrison Ford), the Expendables' new mission's manager, gives Ross a mission to capture Stonebanks in order to bring him to the International Criminal Court to be tried for war crimes. Drummer says that Stonebanks has sold arms to every warlord in Africa and the Middle East, has his own private army and is responsible for the deaths of 2 of Drummer's best agents.Blaming himself for Caesar's injuries, Ross disbands the Expendables (telling them that they are too old and now part of the past and not the future), not wanting his team to get killed following him. Ross leaves for Las Vegas where he enlists retired mercenary Bonaparte (Kelsey Grammer) to help him find a new team of younger mercenaries to pursue Stonebanks. The recruits include former U.S. Marine John Smilee (Kellan Lutz), nightclub bouncer Luna (Ronda Rousey), computer expert Thorn (Glen Powell) and weapons expert Mars (Victor Ortiz). Skilled sharpshooter Galgo (Antonio Banderas) asks to be included in the team (he sends a fake resume to Bonaparte so he can get a meeting with Ross), but Ross turns him down as he considers Galgo to be too old. Bonaparte reveals that he has lung cancer and hence is the last time he is working with Ross.The new team rendezvous with Ross' rival Trench Mauser (Arnold Schwarzenegger), returning a favor for Ross. Mauser agrees to pilot the plane that takes the team to Romania. Ross has traced Stonebanks to Romania where he is set to make an arms deal.Barney and the new recruits infiltrate an office building Stonebanks is using and, having to kill a few men in the process including arms buyer Goran Vata, capture Stonebanks. In transit, Stonebanks taunts Barney and explains why he betrayed the Expendables. Barney nearly kills him to shut him up, but, despite Stonebanks egging him on, he stands down. Stonebanks' men catch up to them, with the aid of his GPS Tracker, and fire a missile at the team's van. Barney is thrown into a river, while Smilee, Luna, Thorn, and Mars are captured by Stonebanks' crew. Barney kills Stonebanks' retrieval team and escapes.Stonebanks sends Ross a video, challenging Ross to come after him and gives him his location in the country of Uzmenistan. While preparing to leave and mount a rescue alone, Ross is found by Galgo, who offers his services again. Ross agrees to give him a chance, later accompanied by the veteran Expendables.They rescue the young mercenaries, only to learn from Stonebanks that he has rigged the place with explosives with only 45 seconds left for them to explode. As both the young and veteran Expendables fight one another, Barney convinces them to work together to take down Stonebanks. Thorn is able to use a signal jamming device to delay the countdown, giving them just under half an hour before detonation. Stonebanks then orders the armed forces of Uzmenistan to attack the building with full force, including tanks and attack helicopters. Drummer and Mauser arrive in a helicopter to help, alongside retired Expendables member Yin Yang (Jet Li).The new and veteran members of the Expendables work together to kill Stonebanks' men. When a second wave of Stonebanks' army starts moving in for an attack, Drummer lands on the building to evacuate the team. However, Stonebanks personally attacks Ross, engaging him in hand-to-hand combat.Having been forced to remove the armor and his weapon, Barney and Stonebanks engage in hand-to-hand combat. Both are evenly matched, but Barney knocks down Stonebanks before they both reach for their guns. Stonebanks shoots, but Barney gets the better of him. At his mercy, Stonebanks questions Ross about delivering him to the International Criminal Court. Barney coldly shoots Stonebanks in response.Seconds after Stonebanks' death, the batteries of Thorn's device run out, causing the building to explode and collapse. The team makes it to Drummer's helicopter and flies away to safety, as Barney clings to it from the outside. In the aftermath, Caesar recovers from his wounds, and Barney officially accepts Galgo, Smilee, Luna, Thorn, and Mars into the team. They all celebrate at a bar together.

Storyline

Barney, Christmas and the rest of the team comes face-to-face with Conrad Stonebanks, who years ago co-founded The Expendables with Barney. Stonebanks subsequently became a ruthless arms trader and someone who Barney was forced to kill - or so he thought. Stonebanks, who eluded death once before, now is making it his mission to end The Expendables -- but Barney has other plans. Barney decides that he has to fight old blood with new blood, and brings in a new era of Expendables team members, recruiting individuals who are younger, faster and more tech-savvy. The latest mission becomes a clash of classic old-school style versus high-tech expertise in the Expendables' most personal battle yet. — ahmetkozan When Barney and Conrad Stonebanks co-founded The Expendables, they were positively unstoppable.
