Michael Johnston, a much in demand voice actor for animated shorts and video games, made his feature debut in a voice performance in director/co-writer/producer Abra Deering’s animated movie, Bee Wars (2012), and then Johnston had his first live-action starring role in director/writer Clay Liford’s comedy, Slash (2016), with Hannah Marks, Michael Ian Black and Missi Pyle, premiering at the South by Southwest Film Festival and distributed by Gravitas Ventures.
Johnston joined the cast of director/writer/editor Alexander Babaev’s indie horror movie, Bornless Ones (2017), with Margaret Judson and Mark Furze and released by Uncork’d Entertainment, followed by Johnston playing opposite lead Xander Berkeley in director/producer/co-editor Adam Cushman’s biopic about Italian exile composer Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco, The Maestro (2018), co-starring Sarah Clarke, Mackenzie Astin and Jon Polito, and distributed by Freestyle Releasing.
Johnston had a leading voice role in director/co-writer Jorgen Klubien’s U.S.-China animated fantasy, The Academy of Magic (2020), with the voice cast of Laura Megan Stahl, Ben Diskin, Michael Orenstein, and Grant George, but delivered little box office for distributor Level 33 Entertainment. Johnston performed a voice role in the English dub version of the Japanese animated romance directed by Masaaki Yuasa, Ride Your Wave (2019), with fellow English voice actors Joey Richter, Merit Leighton, and Sarah Anne Williams, premiering at the Annecy Animation Film Festival, and which grossed $4 million globally for Toho.
Michael Johnston was cast in his first action-adventure movie with director/co-writer/producer M.J. Bassett’s Endangered Species (2021), starring Rebecca Romijn, Jerry O’Connell, and Philip Winchester, and released by Lionsgate Films. Then Johnston led the English dub cast of director/co-writer Tomotaka Shibayama’s animated movie for Studio Colorido/Twin Engine, My Oni Girl (2024), with English voice actors Victoria T. Washington, David Errigo Jr., Jeannie Tirado, Cindy Robinson, and Steve Kramer, and which was distributed by Giggly Box/Twin Engine. Johnston starred in his first horror movie, director/writer/editor Curry Barker’s Obsession (2025), co-starring Inde Navarrette and Andy Richter, with lead producer Jason Blum’s Blumhouse Productions, and which was released by Focus Features after launching at the Toronto Film Festival.
Michael Johnston was born and raised in rural Rutherfordton, North Carolina, by his parents. Johnston attended and graduated from R-S Central High School and then studied acting at the Chicago-based The Second City before pursuing his career in Los Angeles. Johnston’s height is 5’ 9”.
