J.P. Karliak is a much-in-demand voice actor in a wide range of animated features, TV series and video games, including in several comic book theatrical franchises starting with Warner Bros. Animation’s DC Universe movie (the 27th in the series), Batman: The Killing Joke (2016), directed by Sam Liu, with the voices Kevin Conroy, Mark Hamill, Tara Strong and Ray Wise.
Karliak joined the English-language voice cast of the redubbed 2019 version of director/co-writer Satoshi Kon’s 2003 anime drama, Millennium Actress (2019), alongside castmates Cindy Robinson, Erin Yvette, Abby Trott, Christopher Swindle, Benjamin Diskin, and Laura Post, and released in a limited pattern by Go Fish Pictures.
Karliak’s next three animated feature voice assignments were under the purview of Universal Pictures/Illumination, beginning with the sequel, The Secret Life of Pets 2 (2019), featuring the voices of Patton Oswalt, Eric Stonestreet, Jenny Slate, Kevin Hart, Tiffany Haddish, Lake Bell, Nick Kroll, Dana Carvey, Bonny Moynihan and Harrison Ford under Chris Renaud’s direction, grossing a fine $431 million globally against $80 million costs.
Karliak followed this another Illumination-created jukebox musical sequel directed and written by Garth Jennings, Sing 2 (2021), starring Matthew McConaughey, Reese Witherspoon, Scarlett Johansson, Taron Egerton, Nick Kroll, Bobby Cannavale, Pharrell Williams, Nick Offerman, Letitia Wright, Eric Andre, Chelsea Peretti and Bono, and turning in a solid $408 million return on an $85 million budget.
J.P. Karliak performed several different character voices in Universal/Illumination’s sequel, Minions: The Rise of Gru (2022), starring a colorful cast of voices starring Steve Carell, Pierre Coffin, Taraji P. Henson, Michelle Yeoh, Russell Brand, Lucy Lawless, Dolph Lundgren, Danny Trejo, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Julie Andrews and Alan Arkin, under Kyle Balda’s direction, and which grossed a knockout $940 million (against $80 million costs) for distributor Universal Pictures.
Karliak had his biggest feature voice role to date in the movie reboot of the Peyo Company brand, Smurfs (2025), directed by Chris Miller and co-starring Rihanna, James Corden, Nick Offerman, Daniel Levy, Amy Sedaris, Natasha Lyonne, Sandra Oh, Jimmy Kimmel, Octavia Spencer, Nick Kroll, Kurt Russell and John Goodman, produced by Paramount Animation and released wide by Paramount Pictures.
J.P. Karliak was born in Scranton, Pennsylvania, and raised in Dunmore, Pennsylvania, by his parents. Karliak attended the University of Southern California, from which he graduated with a B.A. in Theatre. Karliak has been married to actor/writer Scott Barnhardt since 2022.
