The Colonial Theatre in Belfast, Maine, is a historic, community-run cinema and arts center that has been entertaining Waldo County since 1912. After a brief closure in 2022, the beloved theater reopened in November 2023 under the nonprofit Hawthorne Theatre & Arts Collaborative, preserving its iconic presence—including its rooftop elephant sculpture. Now operating five days a week (Wednesday–Sunday), the Colonial showcases a rich mix of Hollywood, independent, and foreign films, as well as live performances and cultural events. With no-fee ticketing, affordable pricing, wheelchair access, concessions, and a strong emphasis on local engagement, the Colonial is more than a movie theater—it's a vibrant hub for arts, education, and community celebration.
