Netflix
continues to be in a state of disarray after the company released its third
quarter earnings on Tuesday. The report revealed
Q3 revenues of $12.87 billion with earnings of $3.66 billion, exceeding pre-release
expectations of $3.45 billion. Moreover,
Netflix is projecting Q4 revenue that will be 12% higher than last year’s Q4.
Despite these positive
fundamentals, the price of Netflix shares fell 6%, due in large part to a
downward revision in its forecast of its expected 2026 annual revenue. It now says that it expects $51.1 billion in
revenue, which is on the low-end of the range that it had given in its most
recent earnings report.
The relative lack of major new
films or series in 2026, reports of a pattern of second-season
decline in viewership of its new series, and slowing
growth in new subscribers has contributed to a growing impression
that the company is reaching the limits of its potential as a media business.
Enthusiasm about the
company’s emerging advertising business was also dampened, with a forecast of 2026
ad sales being lowered to $2.7 billion from an earlier estimate of $3 billion. Netflix cited the “slower than expected”
rollout of some of their ad capabilities.
These developments have prompted Netflix to make significant changes, announcing
layoffs
of over 1,000 employees and the
departure of longtime execs.
Netflix Co-CEOs Ted Sarandos and Greg Peters have suggested that there
will be more changes to come, including rumors
that many more of its upcoming movies could begin their distribution with a
theatrical run.
