Plot Summary

Looking into the Sun tells the story of four women from different eras whose lives are eerily intertwined. Each of them experiences her childhood or adolescence on the same four-sided farmstead in the Altmark region, but as they wander through their own present, traces of the past reveal themselves to them.[1]Alma grows up as the child of a landowner's family in the German Empire shortly before the First World War. The seven-year-old girl's parents are taciturn, and the family's daily life is characterized by religiosity and superstition. One day, Alma discovers through a death photograph that she was named after her deceased sister. Because she resembles her so closely, she is teased by her older sisters. From then on, she believes she is destined for the same fate and becomes preoccupied with her own mortality.[2] She poses herself in the same position as the dead woman in the daguerreotype.[3] After the family stages a work accident to prevent Alma's older brother Fritz from being drafted into the war, the housekeeper Trudi cares for Fritz, who has his lower leg amputated as a result of the "accident."Erika lives on the farm during the Second World War in the 1940s. She becomes consumed by an erotic curiosity and fascination[4] for her "war-disabled" Uncle Fritz[2], makes countless drawings of the bedridden man, and even fakes an amputation herself. She also sneaks into his room at night to taste the sweat that collects from Fritz's navel.[5] As the war draws to a close, Erika is seen on the bank of the river that will soon become the border between East and West Germany, before she disappears into it along with other women.The vivacious Angelika lives on the farm during the GDR era in the 1980s. She is the daughter of Erika's sister Irm. Angelika's awakening sexuality attracts the attention of her uncle Uwe, who tries to exploit her. His awkward son Rainer, Angelika's cousin, also develops feelings for her. Angelika and Rainer flirt and kiss,[4] while Angelika continues to teeter between a lust for life and a longing for death. She joins the family for a Polaroid photo.In the film's present, Nelly, originally from Berlin, lives with her older sister Lenka[6] and their parents on the largely empty, dilapidated farm, which they are trying to renovate themselves. She grows up in apparent security. Nevertheless, the girl is haunted by intense dreams and the unconscious burden of the past. Meanwhile, Lenka befriends a girl from the neighborhood named Kaya, whose mother has died. One day, a tragic event is repeated on the farm, after which the boundaries between past and present become completely blurred.
