The late SNL star was the original voice of Shrek and had completed roughly 90% of his lines. After Farley died in December 1997, fellow SNL alum Mike Myers took over and insisted on a full script rewrite. Myers also added Shrek's "air quotes" gesture as a deliberate homage to Farley's Weekend Update character Bennett Brauer, who used the same mannerism.
Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz, and John Lithgow all recorded their dialogue in separate sessions, with a production reader feeding them the other characters' lines. Lithgow later admitted that while he enjoyed playing Lord Farquaad, he was genuinely disappointed he never got to work directly with the other stars.
Smash Mouth's hit was only a temporary placeholder track laid over the opening sequence to help animators get the timing right for test screenings. But test audiences loved it so much that the producers kept it — and then hired Smash Mouth to also record the closing cover of "I'm a Believer."
During a recording session, Diaz drank a Coca-Cola and let out an unexpected burp. The crew found it so funny that they wrote it into the film. Eddie Murphy's ad-libbed response — "She's just as nasty as you are!" — was his genuine, off-the-cuff reaction to hearing it in the booth.
