Definition:
Inside every camera lens is a specific optical point around which the lens must rotate for panoramic or multi-camera images to stitch together without visible distortion. That point is the nodal point, also called the no-parallax point. Rotate the camera around any other point, and foreground elements appear to shift position relative to the background.
What It Means in Movies:
For most conventional filmmaking, the nodal point is never a consideration. But in VR filmmaking, panoramic photography, and any production that requires multiple images to be stitched seamlessly together, nodal point accuracy becomes essential. If the camera is not rotating around the correct optical centre, the stitched result shows visible seams and spatial distortions at the join lines.
Why It Matters:
As immersive media and 360-degree production have expanded, nodal point accuracy has become a more common production concern. The nodal point also varies between lenses and focal lengths, which means it must be individually determined for every lens used in a nodal rig.
Example:
A production team shooting a 360-degree VR experience of a film set must ensure every camera in the multi-camera rig is correctly positioned at the nodal point. Get it wrong, and the stitched final image shows visible seams wherever the camera positions meet.
