Every department head needs someone who makes the operation actually run. On a film set, that person is the best boy. Working directly under either the gaffer in the electrical department or the key grip in the grip department, the best boy handles scheduling, equipment coordination, and crew management so the department head can focus on the creative work.
What It Means in Movies:
The Best Boy Electric manages the electrical crew, coordinates equipment rental, tracks what gear is where, and makes sure the right people are in the right place at the right call time. The Best Boy Grip does the same for the grip department. Neither role is glamorous. Both are indispensable.
Why It Matters:
Department heads think about the image. Best Boys think about everything else. Without them, the logistical coordination of lighting and camera support would fall apart entirely. The DP would spend half their day solving problems that have nothing to do with cinematography.
