Founded in 1984 in Edmonton, Alberta, Magic Lantern Theatres currently own 10 cinemas in Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan and Ontario.
They originally showed movies that were no longer screening at major theatre chains at discounted ticket prices, but with the current quick turnover for most movies from theatre to home release, some of these theatres now show first run movies. They also are known for showing first-run indie Canadian films, as well as foreign features.
