Renate Reinsve is one of Norway’s most acclaimed international actors since her breakout in 2021 as the title character of Joachim Trier’s and Eskil Vogt’s drama-comedy, The Worst Person in the World (2021), and made her feature debut in a supporting role in her first movie with director/co-writer Trier and writer Vogt, Oslo, August 31st (2011), loosely based on both Louis Malle’s film The Fire Within (1963) and Pierre Drieu La Rochelle’s 1931 novel, Will O’ the Wisp, starring Anders Danielsen Lie, Hans Olav Brenner and Ingrid Olava, produced by the Norwegian film companies Motlys/Don’t Look Now, premiering in the Un Certain Regard at the Cannes Film Festival and released by Strand Releasing (U.S.)/Nordisk Film Distribution (Scandinavia Territories).
Reinsve was cast in Norwegian director Arild Andresen’s drama, The Orheim Company (2012), with Vebjorn Enger, Kristoffer Joner, and Cecille Mosli, and then Reinsve had a supporting role in Norwegian director/co-writer Yngvild Sve Flikke’s comedy, Women In Oversized Men’s Shirts (2015), with Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas, Henriette Steenstrup, and Anne Krigsvoll, and released by Norwegian Film Distribution.
Reinsve landed her first leading role in a movie under co-writer Pål Øie’s direction in the Norwegian horror movie sequel, Villmark Asylum (2015), co-starring Ellen Dorrit Petersen, Anders Baasmo, and Tomas Norstrom, and then Reinsve was nominated for the best supporting actress Amanda Award for her performance in director/writer Rune Denstad Langlo’s black comedy, Welcome to Norway! Renate Reinsve won international acclaim (including the Best Actress Palme at the Cannes Film Festival, where it premiered) as the lead in The Worst Person in the World (2021), the third and final film in director/co-writer Joachim Trier’s and co-writer Eskil Vogt’s Oslo trilogy, co-starring Anders Danielsen Lie, Herbert Nordrum, Hans Olav Brenner and Thea Stabell, and which won two Oscar nominations and grossed nearly $13 million worldwide via distributors Neon (U.S.)/SF Studios (Norway)/Memento Distribution (France)/TriArt Film (Sweden)/Camera Film (Denmark). Reinsve starred in director/co-writer Thea Hvistendahl’s horror movie based on co-writer John Ajvide Lindqvist’s novel, Handling the Undead (2024), with Bjorn Sundquist, Bente Borsum, Lie, and Bahar Pars, launching at the Sundance Film Festival and released by Neon (U.S.)/Nordisk Film (International).
Reinsve made her American film debut in director/writer Aaron Schimberg’s psychological comedy-drama, A Different Man (2024), starring Sebastian Stan, Adam Pearson, C. Mason Wells, Owen Kline and Michael Shannon, premiering at the Sundance Film Festival in the U.S. and the Berlin Film Festival internationally, and earning $1.5 million for producers A24/Killer Films/Grand Motel Films and distributor A24. Reinsve co-starred with Gael Garcia Bernal, Berenice Bejo, and Olivia Williams in director/co-writer Piero Messina’s Italian/French/British sci-fi co-production, Another End (2024), also premiering at the Berlin Film Festival and released by Newen Connect.
Renate Reinsve was the star and took an executive producer credit for Norwegian director/writer Halfdan Ullmann Tondel’s thriller, Armand (2024), co-starring Ellen Dorrit Petersen and Endre Hellestveit, premiering in the Cannes Film Festival’s Un Certain Regard section and Norway’s selection to the Oscars’ Best International Film competition. Reinsve reunited (and was an executive producer) with director Joachim Trier and writer Eskil Vogt for her acclaimed co-starring performance in Sentimental Value (2025), co-starring Stellan Skarsgard, Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas and Elle Fanning, winning the Grand Prix in the Cannes Film Festival and also the first Norwegian movie to win the Best International Feature Oscar, one of its nine nominations including Reinsve’s for Best Actress.
Reinsve starred in director/writer Itonje Soimer Guttormsen’s Norwegian comedy set in the Canary Islands, Butterfly (2026), with Helene Bjorneby and Numan Acar, and which was a Norway/U.K./Germany/Sweden co-production. Reinsve reunited with co-star Sebastian Stan in director/writer/producer Cristian Mungiu’s first film made outside of Romania, Fjord (2026), with Lisa Carelhed, Ellen Dorrit Petersen, and Lisa Loven Kongsli, premiering in competition at the Cannes Film Festival and released by Neon (U.S.)/Goodfellas (France, International).
Renate Reinsve co-starred with Chiwetel Ejiofor in director/composer Kane Parsons’s debut U.S. feature, Backrooms (2026), starring Chiwetel Ejiofor, Renate Reinsve, Mark Duplass, Finn Bennett, and Lukita Maxwell, written by Will Soodik, and which was produced (in part) by James Wan, Shawn Levy, Osgood Perkins, and Peter Chernin and released wide by A24. Reinsve returned to her native Norway to join the cast of the Rikke Gregersen-directed comedy-drama, Almost There (2026), with Sarah Francesca Braenne and Fredrik Stenberg Ditlev-Simonsen, and then Reinsve co-starred in her first British film, director/co-writer Joe Talbot’s film, The Governesses (date to be announced), co-written by Olivia Gatwood, co-starring Lily-Rose Depp and Hoyeon, produced by Ed Guiney and Rob Richert via BBC Film, and which was released by A24.
Reinsve co-starred in director Alexander Payne’s first Danish-language movie, Somewhere Out There (2027), co-starring and co-written by Erlend Loe and Ake Sandgren, produced by Birgitte Skov, and which was released by Searchlight Pictures (U.S., International ex-Denmark)/Scanbox Entertainment (Denmark).
Renate Reinsve was born and raised in a suburb (Solbergelva) of the southern Norwegian city of Drammen by her parents. Reinsve, who had been expelled from high school at age 16, then attended and graduated from the Oslo National Academy of the Arts. Reinsve was in a relationship with animator Julian Nazario Vargas, with whom she had a son. Reinsve’s height is 5’ 10”. Reinsve’s estimated net worth is $4 million.
