Peter Coonan is a highly acclaimed Irish actor, particularly in television, and has acted in films since 2000 with director/writer Conor McPherson’s Irish drama, Saltwater, with Peter McDonald, Brian Cox and Brendan Gleeson, and released by Buena Vista International. Coonan landed his first starring film role in director/writer Mark O’Connor’s Irish crime movie, Between the Canals (2010), with Dan Hyland, Stephen Jones and Damien Dempsey, and which was distributed by Avalon Films.
Coonan continued with director/co-writer Mark O’Connor and co-starred with Barry Keoghan in the Irish thriller, Stalker (2012), and then Coonan had a supporting role under Lenny Abrahamson’s direction in the Irish drama, What Richard Did (2012), starring Jack Reynor, with Roisin Murphy, Lars Mikkelsen and Lorraine Pilkington, and released by Element Pictures. Coonan reunited with director/writer O’Connor for the Irish revenge drama, King of the Travellers (2012), with John Connors and Michael Collins, and which was produced by Irish Film Board/Stalker Films/Vico Films.
Peter Coonan appeared in his first international co-production, A Thousand Times Good Night (2013), co-starring Juliette Binoche and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau under Erik Poppe’s direction, co-produced in Ireland and Norway and handled by Nordisk Film Distribution. Coonan then joined the ensemble of screenwriter Colin Murphy’s film version of his play, The Guarantee (2014), directed by Ian Power and with David Murray, Gary Lydon and Orla Fitzgerald, and then Coonan starred in director/co-writer/producer Tom Collins’s Irish-language historical drama, Penance (2018), based on Padraic O Conaire’s story, "Seacht mBua an Éirí Amach" ("Seven Virtues of the [Easter] Rising"), with Gerard McSorley and Barry McGovern and Starline Entertainment as distributor.
Coonan was cast in his first U.S. film production in We Have Always Lived in the Castle (2018), adapted by Mark Kruger from Shirley Jackson’s 1962 novel, co-starring Taissa Farmiga, Alexandra Daddario, Crispin Glover and Sebastian Stan under Stacie Passon’s direction, and which received wide critical support and a release by Brainstorm Media. Coonan led the cast of the Irish drama, Dark Lies the Island (2019), directed by Ian Fitzgibbon, with Charlie Murphy, Moe Dunford, Pat Shortt and Tommy Tiernan, and premiered at the Dublin Film Festival before release in Ireland and the U.K., followed by Coonan joining the Irish-language drama about the great famine, Arracht (2019), directed by Tomás Ó Súilleabháin and Ireland’s submission to the International Oscar race.
Peter Coonan was nominated for Best Supporting Actor by the Irish Film & Television Awards for the Irish-language Northern Ireland-produced drama, Doineann (2021), directed by Damian McCann, written by Aislinn Clarke, and co-starring Brid Brennan, with a release by Wildcard Distribution. Coonan played a supporting role in director/co-writer Stephen Hall’s Irish period horror movie, The Gates (2022), with John Rhys-Davies and Richard Brake, and then Coonan had another supporting role in director/writer Eva Birthistle’s Irish drama, Kathleen is Here (2024), starring Hazel Doupe and nominated for seven nominations from the Irish Film & Television Awards (including Best Picture) after premiering at the Raindance Film Festival.
Coonan reunited with director/co-writer Mark O’Connor in the Irish crime drama, Amongst the Wolves (2024), with Luke McQuillan, Daniel Fee and Aidan Gillen, premiering at the Galway Film Festival and released by Wildcard Distribution. Coonan co-starred with Adam Scott in director/writer Damian McCarthy’s Ireland/United Arab Emirates/U.S. co-production, Hokum (2026), launching at the South by Southwest Film Festival before a wide release by Neon (U.S.)/Black Bear Pictures (U.K., Ireland)/Front Row Filmed Entertainment (U.A.E.).
Peter Coonan once again joined director/writer Mark O’Connor for the satirical festival festival-set movie, Oui Cannes (date to be announced), produced by Park Films.
Peter Coonan was born and raised in Dublin, Ireland, by his parents. Coonan was engaged to Kim O’Driscoll in 2015; the couple has two children, Beth and Katie.
