Nag Ashwin (birthname: Nag Ashwin Reddy) is one of the leading director-writers who works in Telugu-language Indian cinema. Ashwin broke into Telugu moviemaking as assistant director (and bit actor) in director-writer Ajay Sastry’s Nenu Meeka Telusa (2008), writer-director Sekhar Kammula’s Leader (2010), and Kammula’s Life Is Beautiful (2012).
Ashwin then stepped up to the position of writer-director with a trio of movies, starting with Yevade Subramayam (2015), with Nani, Malvika Nair, and Vijay Devarakonda; continuing with the highly acclaimed biopic, Mahanati (2018), starring Keerthy Suresh and Dulquer Salmaan, winning three National Film Awards and being the highest-grossing female-themed South Indian movie; and then Ashwin was co-director of the segment titled xLife in Netflix’s first Telugu-language movie, Pitta Kathalu/Short Stories (2021).
Nag Ashwin was producer only of writer-director Anudeep K.V.’s blockbuster comedy-drama, Jathi Ratnalu/Jewels of the Nation (2021), grossing over ten times costs and co-starring Naveen Polishetty, Priyadarshi, Rahul Ramakrishna, and Faria Abdullah. Ashwin was director-writer of one of the priciest Indian movies on record, the dystopian sci-fi inspired by Hindu scriptures, Kalki 2898 AD (2024), co-starring Prabhas, Deepika Padukone, Amitabh Bachchan, and Kamal Haasan, and released by AA Films.
