Michael Chaves is a director who frequently collaborates with producer and horror specialist James Wan on an impressive string of box-office hits (the combination of which have resulted in movies that earned over seven times their costs), and after making several short horror films, launched his feature directorial career with an entry in The Conjuring Universe though not a direct sequel, The Curse of La Llorona (2019), with Linda Cardellini, Raymond Cruz and Patricia Velasquez and backed by lead producer Wan’s Atomic Monster unit with New Line Cinema and, though panned by critics out of the South by Southwest Film Festival, went on to an extremely profitable theatrical run ($123 million gross on $9 million costs) for Warner Bros.
Chaves then directed the sequel, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It (2021), the seventh entry in The Conjuring Universe written by David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick and Wan (who also produced), with Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson reprising their lead roles, with a Warner Bros./New Line Cinema release returning a robust $206 million (on a $39 million budget).
Chaves again worked with producer and character creator James Wan as director of the sequel, The Nun II (2023), the eight installment in The Conjuring Universe with returning cast members Taissa Farmiga, Jonas Bloquet and Bonnie Aarons and new cast mate Storm Reid, grossing an outstanding $269.5 million return on $38.5 million expenses for producers Atomic Monster/Safran Company/New Line Cinema and distributor Warner Bros.
Chaves directed his third sequel in a row, The Conjuring: Last Rites (2025), the ninth and reportedly last The Conjuring Universe installment, again co-starring Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson, and again produced by Wan and Peter Safran and released by Warner Bros.
Michael Chaves branched out from the world of The Conjuring as director of The Reckoning (date to be announced), written by Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan and produced by Michael Bay, Bradley Fuller, and Andrew Form for the Platinum Dunes production company.
Michael Chaves was born and raised by his parents in Los Angeles.
