Madelyn Cline, most widely seen in the role of Sarah in the popular Netflix teen series, Outer Banks (2020-present), first appeared on the big screen (after appearing in a string of short films from 2011 to 2014) in writer/producer Gary Wheeler’s comedy, Savannah Sunrise (2016), directed by Randall Stevens and co-starring Shawnee Smith, Pamela Reed, Clare Carey and Shawn Christian, and released by Imagicomm Entertainment, which also co-produced by INSP Films and Orca Entertainment Group.
Cline landed her first role in a major theatrical release in director/writer/producer/actor Joel Edgerton’s biopic based on Garrard Conley’s memoir, Boy Erased (2018), co-starring Lucas Hedges, Nicole Kidman, Joe Alwyn, Xavier Dolan, Cherry Jones, Flea and Russell Crowe, premiering at the Telluride Film Festival before a Focus Features release.
Cline, after landing her first starring role in a feature film which premiered at the Woodstock Film Festival but didn’t receive theatrical distribution—director/writer/producer Rebecca Eskreis’s murder mystery What Breaks the Ice (2020)—joined the cast of director/writer James DeMonaco’s drama backed by Jason Blum’s Blumhouse Productions, This is the Night (2021), co-starring Frank Grillo, Lucius Hoyos, Jonah Hauer-King, Bobby Cannavale and Naomi Watts, and given an exclusive New York City release before digital release by Universal Pictures.
Cline was cast as Whiskey, the girlfriend of Dave Bautista’s Twitch video game streamer, in director/writer/producer Rian Johnson’s standalone sequel, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery (2022), starring Daniel Craig, Edward Norton, Janelle Monae, Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr., Jessica Henwick, Kate Hudson and Bautista, and released by Netflix in limited theatrical pattern (for $15 million returns) before streaming.
Madelyn Cline had her first starring role in a wide theatrical release in director/co-writer Jennifer Kaytin Robinson’s reboot sequel, I Know What You Did Last Summer (2025), with Chase Sui Wonders, Jonah Hauer-King, Tyriq Withers, Sarah Pidgeon, Billy Campbell, Freddie Prinze Jr. and Jennifer Love Hewitt, co-produced by Columbia Pictures/Screen Gems/Original Films and released by Sony Pictures Releasing.
Cline landed her second starring role in a row in the Lasse Hallström-directed romantic drama, The Map That Leads to You (date to be announced), co-starring KJ Apa, Sofia Wylie, Madison Thompson, and Josh Lucas, produced by MGM/Nostromo Pictures/Temple Hill Entertainment and released by Amazon MGM Studios.
Cline’s rise as a movie star continued as she co-starred with Johnny Depp and Penelope Cruz in the yacht-based thriller, Day Drinker (date to be announced), with Manu Rios, Aron Piper, and Juan Diego Botto under Marc Webb’s direction, and released by Lionsgate.
