Macon Blair (birthname: Macon Chaplain Blair) has an unusually diverse profile for the big screen—to say nothing of his second life as a comic book and graphic novel author—ranging from acting in movies directed by major filmmakers (including lifelong friend Jeremy Saulnier, with whom he also written and produced) to writing and directing in the horror and crime veins, starting with The Monkey’s Paw (2013), which Blair wrote as an adaptation of W. W. Jacobs’ 1902 short story for director Brett Simmons, co-starring Stephen Lang, C.J. Thomason and Charles S. Dutton and released by Chiller Films.
Blair had a notably triumphant filmmaking debut at the Sundance Film Festival as director/writer of the comedy-thriller, I Don’t Feel at Home in This World Anymore (2017), co-starring Melanie Lynskey and Elijah Wood, and becoming the festival’s first U.S. Dramatic Narrative Grand Jury Prize winner to be bought by a distributor (Netflix) which bypassed theatrical release for streaming.
Blair’s next two features as screenwriter, though artistically significant, had the same fate as his filmmaking debut—no theatrical release by Netflix, which sent each to streaming: first, the solid crime movie directed and co-written by Evan Katz, Small Crimes (2017), co-starring Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Gary Cole, Molly Parker, Blair, Pat Healy, Jacki Weaver and Robert Forster, premiering at the South by Southwest Film Festival and earning $1.4 million in overseas theatrical; second, the striking and complex thriller directed by Jeremy Saulnier, Hold the Dark (2018), based on William Giraldi’s novel, with Jeffrey Wright, Alexander Skarsgard, James Badge Dale, Riley Keough and Julian Black Antelope, and premiering at the Toronto Film Festival.
Blair switched gears for his second feature as director/writer with the reboot of The Toxic Avenger and remake of the 1984 movie (premiering in 2023 at Fantastic Fest but theatrically released wide in 2025 under the expanded title The Toxic Avenger Uncut by Cineverse and Iconic Events Releasing), and starring Peter Dinklage (as Winston Gooze and the voice of The Toxic Avenger), Jacob Tremblay, Taylour Paige, kevin Bacon and Elijah Wood.
Macon Blair co-wrote the sci-fi thriller, 57 Seconds (2023), based on E.C. Tubb’s story, “Fallen Angel,” co-starring Josh Hutcherson and Morgan Freeman under the direction of Rusty Cundieff (who also co-wrote), and released by The Avenue. Blair wrote the original screenplay of the crime comedy, Brothers (2024), co-starring and produced by Josh Brolin and Peter Dinklage (with fellow producers Andrew Lazar and David Ginsberg), with Taylour Paige, M. Emmet Walsh, Brendan Fraser, and Glenn Close, and which was released theatrically and on streaming by Amazon MGM Studios.
Blair, as director/writer/producer, continued working with actor Peter Dinklage and fellow producer Jeremy Saulnier, this time on Blair’s original drug-fueled comedy, The Shitheads (date to be announced), co-starring Dave Franco and O’Shea Jackson, and produced by Gramercy Park Media. Blair has appeared as an actor in several features, including several films by Saulnier: Murder Party (2007); the lead role in the excellent revenge movie, Blue Ruin (2013), which won the FIPRESCI prize at Cannes’ Directors Fortnight selection, as did the shocking horror-thriller, Green Room (2015), co-starring Anton Yelchin, Imogen Poots, Alia Shawkat and Patrick Stewart, and for which Blair was also a co-producer; Hold the Dark (2018), premiering at the Toronto Film Festival; and Blair was an executive producer on director/writer Saulnier’s gripping Southern thriller, Rebel Ridge (2024), starring Aaron Pierre, Don Johnson, AnnaSophia Robb and James Cromwell.
Blair has also appeared in supporting roles in major movies including the Stephen Gaghan-directed Gold (2016), starring and produced by Matthew McConaughey; filmmaker Sean Baker’s acclaimed drama, The Florida Project (2017), with Willem Dafoe, Brooklynn Kimberly Prince and Caleb Landry Jones and premiering in Directors’ Fortnight; director Steven Soderbergh’s heist comedy, Logan Lucky (2017), co-starring Channing Tatum, Adam Driver, Daniel Craig and Riley Keough; filmmaker Jim Cummings’ comedy-drama, Thunder Road (2018), winner of the South by Southwest Film Festival’s Grand Jury Prize; the Craig Zobel horror movie for Blumhouse/Universal Pictures, The Hunt (2020), with Ike Barinholtz, Betty Gilpin, Emma Roberts and Hilary Swank; director/writer/producer J Blakeson’s black comedy, I Care a Lot (2020), with Rosamund Pike, Eiza Gonzalez, Peter Dinklage, Chris Messina and Dianne Wiest; Christopher Nolan’s Oscar-winning megahit biopic, Oppenheimer (2023); director/writer/producer Bob Byington’s comedy, Lousy Carter (2023), with David Krumholtz, Olivia Thirlby and Stephen Root, and premiering at the Locarno Film Festival; in another movie starring and produced by Dinklage—The Thicket (2024), based on Joe R. Lansdale’s 2014 novel, co-starring Juliette Lewis, and directed by Elliott Lester; and in director/writer/producer Todd Rohal’s indie screen adaptation of Johnny Ryan’s highly transgressive graphic comic titled Fuck My Son! (2025).
