Kitao Sakurai is a Japanese-born, American-based filmmaker who began his film career as a child actor in various movies including Kevin Smith’s comedy, Dogma (1999), and then transitioned in 2002 to work as a cinematographer on American indie short and feature films, including Transformations (2006) and Ry Russo-Young’s You Wont Miss Me (2009). Sakurai was director/writer/actor of his striking feature debut, Aardvark (2010), produced by Andrew Barchilon, and which premiered at the Locarno Film Festival, where it won the Best First Feature (Special Mention) award.
Sakurai was director/co-writer of Bad Trip (2021), originally set for theatrical release but set for streaming during the COVID-19 shutdown—only to be pirated before its streaming premiere (and eventually released on streaming by Netflix), and which co-starred Eric Andre (who was also a lead producer and a co-screenwriter and co-story writer with Sakurai and Andrew Barchilon). Sakurai was director/co-writer (with T.J. Fixman) of Street Fighter (2026), the third live-action movie adapted from Capcom’s Street Fighter video game series, starring Noah Centineo, Andrew Koji, Callina Liang, David Dastmalchian, Eric Andre, Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson and Jason Momoa, produced by Capcom and Legendary Pictures and released wide by Paramount Pictures.
