In a botanical garden in a medieval German university town, a ginkgo tree has been standing since 1832. The film tells three stories across three different eras, each centered on a person whose life intersects with the tree. In 1908, the university's first female botany student tries to find her footing in a department built to exclude her. In 1972, a quiet student is drawn toward a housemate and the geranium plant she studies. In 2020, a neuroscientist from Hong Kong arrives to research newborn brain activity, finds the pandemic upending his plans, and begins measuring the ginkgo's neural signals instead. Three human stories. One tree. A century of quiet witness.
