Dean Fleischer Camp is primarily an stop-motion animation/live-action filmmaker best known for his short films and his Oscar-nominated feature version of the charming Marcel the Shell with Shoes On (2021), originally co-created with now ex-wife Jenny Slate and which he directed, co-wrote (with Slate and Nick Paley, and story writer Elisabeth Holm), produced, voiced and co-edited (with Paley), featuring the voices of Rosa Salazar, Thomas Mann, Leslie Stahl and Isabella Rossellini and which grossed $7 million for distributors A24/Universal Pictures International/Focus Features, and was Oscar-nominated for Best Animated Feature.
Camp, despite his notable work in the animation space (which includes several non-Marcel short films), made his feature film debut as director of the experimental documentary, Fraud (2016), which re-edits found footage on YouTube, produced by Riel Roch-Decter Sebastian Pardo, executive produced by David Gordon Green, Jody Hill and Danny McBride, and premiered at HotDocs documentary festival in Toronto.
Camp jumped from the success of the Marcel feature to the director’s chair of Lilo & Stitch (2025), Disney’s highly anticipated, $150 million live-action/animated remake of the 2002 animated original, with its director-writer Chris Sanders returning as the voice of Stitch, with Maia Kealoha as Lilo, and supporting turns by Billy Magnussen, Tia Carrere, Courtney B. Vance and Zach Galifianakis.
