Daniel Stamm is a German-born writer-director who specializes in the horror genre. After writing a short film in Germany (Vergessene Ritter in 2000) and directing another short in his new base in Los Angeles (Off Hollywood & Vine in 2004), Stamm wrote and directed his debut horror film, an independent found-footage feature titled A Necessary Death (2008), which won the Audience Award at AFI Fest Los Angeles.

Although the Stamm-directed horror film, The Last Exorcist (2010), was nominated for a Best First Feature Award (along with Best Supporting Female) from the Independent Spirit Awards, it was actually Stamm’s second feature, co-produced by Eli Roth, with Patrick Fabian and Ashley Bell, and earning over $67 million globally on a $1.8 million budget.

In a project spurred by Jason Blum of Blumhouse Productions, Stamm co-wrote (with David Birke) and directed 13 Sins (2014), a remake of Matthew Chookiat Sakveerakul’s Thai horror movie, 13 Beloved (aka 13: Game of Death) (2006), and co-starring Mark Webber, Pruitt Taylor Vince, and Ron Perlman.

After seven years of directing episodes for variation TV shows (including Fear the Walking Dead (2017)), Daniel Stamm returned to features as director of the horror film, Prey for the Devil (2022), with Jacqueline Byers, Colin Salmon, and Christian Navarro, and distributed by Lionsgate.

Personal life

Born and raised in the northern German port city of Hamburg, Daniel Stamm grew up interested in all things media, including creating his own radio show and editing a magazine geared to young readers. After studying drama and writing and publishing a play, Stamm worked as a peace worker in war-torn Belfast in Northern Ireland. He attended and graduated from Filmakademie Baden-Wurttemberg, the major film school in southern Germany. After writing a German television movie and directing a non-fiction profile on rocker Nick Cave, Stamm attended the American Film Institute’s directing program in Los Angeles, where he made a thesis film nominated for an award from the American Society of Cinematographers. Stamm’s non-filmmaking activities and projects included songwriting and hitchhiking across the United States. He is married to Jonako Donley.
