Brian Duffield began his feature filmmaking career as a screenwriter but made his leap into the triple role of director/writer/producer with the high school horror comedy, Spontaneous (2020), adapted from Aaron Starmer’s 2016 novel, co-starring Katherine Langford and Charlie Plummer, with Yvonne Orji, Hayley Law, Rob Huebel, and Piper Perabo, earning strong reviews and released by Paramount Pictures. Duffield stayed in the horror lane, and next directed, wrote, and produced the sci-fi horror feature he wrote originally as a spec script, No One Will Save You (2023), starring Kaitlyn Dever (speaking the movie’s only spoken words of dialogue-five), produced (in part) by 20th Century Studios, and which was released in a brief theatrical run by 20th Century before a streaming release by Hulu.
Duffield has been a produced screenwriter since his first credit with the independent movie, Quarantine (2014), followed by a shared screenplay credit (with Akiva Goldsman and Mark Bomback) on the sequel, The Divergent Series: Insurgent (2015), starring Shailene Woodley and Theo James under Robert Schwentke’s direction, and grossing over $297 million for Lionsgate. Brian Duffield was director/co-writer/producer of the survival thriller, Whalefall (2026), based on co-screenwriter Daniel Kraus’s 2023 novel, starring Austin Abrams, with supporting performances by Josh Brolin, Elizabeth Shue, John Ortiz, Jane Levy, Emily Rudd, produced (in part) by Brian Grazer and his Imagine Entertainment, and which was released wide by 20th Century Studios.
Brian Duffield was co-screenwriter (with Adam Cozad) and story writer of the sci-fi horror movie, Underwater (2020), starring Kristen Stewart, Vincent Cassel, Jessica Henwick, John Gallagher Jr., Mamoudou Athie and T.J. Miller, and which was produced (in part) and released by 20th Century Fox, followed by Duffield credited as co-screenwriter (with Matthew Robinson) of Love and Monsters (2020), which Duffield originally wrote and sold as a spec script titled Monster Problems, starring Dylan O’Brien, Henwick, Dan Ewing and Michael Rooker, and released in limited pattern by Paramount Pictures and Oscar-nominated for Best Special Effects.
Duffield was sole (and the solo) screenwriter for the horror movie produced (in part) by Columbia Pictures and J.J. Duffield has also been producer only on a pair of movies written by Jimmy Warden, the first a hit and the second barely seen: the Elizabeth Banks-directed horror comedy, Cocaine Bear (2023), starring Keri Russell, Ray Liotta and Margo Martindale, grossing over $90 million for Universal Pictures; and then director/writer Warden’s comedy, Borderline (2025), co-starring Samantha Weaving, Ray Nicholson and Jimmy Fails, and distributed by Magnet Releasing.
