Aziz Ansari (birthname: Aziz Ismail Ansari) has successfully transferred his gifts for topical, often racially-themed stand-up comedy to—first, television, and then, the movies, first in small roles in director/co-writer/producer Todd Phillips’ comedy, School for Scoundrels (2006); the Rainn Wilson-starring comedy, The Rocker (2008); the Paul Rudd/Jason Segel-starring comedy, I Love You, Man (2009); director/writer/producer Judd Apatow’s comedy, Funny People (2009); director/writer Jody Hill’s crime comedy starring Seth Rogen, Observe and Report (2009); and director/writer/producer Nicholas Stoller’s comedy co-starring Jonah Hill and Russell Brand, Get Him to the Greek (2010), and then landing his first co-starring role in Columbia Pictures/Sony Pictures Releasing’s comedy, 30 Minutes or Less (2011), co-starring Jesse Eisenberg, Danny McBride and Nick Swardson under Ruben Fleischer’s direction.
Ansari took on three consecutive voice roles in What’s Your Number? (2011); and then in two successive animated features from Blue Sky Studios/20th Century Fox Animation and released by 20th Century Fox-- Ice Age: Continental Drift (2012), with the voice cast of Ray Romano, John Leguizamo, Denis Leary, Nicki Minaj, Drake, Jennifer Lopez and Queen Latifah; and director/story writer Chris Wedge’s action fantasy, Epic (2013), based on William Joyce’s 1996 children’s book, The Leaf Men and the Brave Good Bugs, with voice cast mates Colin Farrell, Josh Hutcherson, Amanda Seyfried, Christoph Waltz, Chris O’Dowd, Pitbull, Jason Sudeikis, Steven Tyler and Beyoncé Knowles.
Ansari (like the rest of the cast) played an exaggerated version of himself in debuting co-directors/co-writers Seth Rogen’s and Evan Goldberg’s apocalyptic comedy, This is The End (2013), a feature version of Rogen’s and Goldberg’s short film, Jay and Seth Versus the Apocalypse (2007), co-starring James Franco, Jonah Hill, Rogen, Jay Baruchel, Danny McBride, Craig Robinson, Michael Cera and Emma Watson, and which grossed a terrific $127 million for Columbia Pictures/Sony Pictures Releasing. Ansari then had a supporting role in the teen sex comedy, Date and Switch (2014), with Nicholas Braun, Hunter Cope, Dakota Johnson, and Zach Cregger under Chris Nelson’s direction, and which was co-produced and released by Lionsgate.
Ansari performed a supporting voice role in 20th Century Animation/Bento Box Entertainment’s animated feature, The Bob’s Burgers Movie (2022), based on creator Loren Bouchard’s TV series, Bob’s Burgers, with the voices of H. Jon Benjamin, Dan Mintz, Eugene Mirman, Larry Murphy, John Roberts, Kristen Schaal, Zach Galifianakis and Kevin Kline, grossing a subdued $34 million for 20th Century Studios. Ansari made his feature debut as star/director/writer/producer of the comedy, Good Fortune (2025), starring Seth Rogen, Keanu Reeves, Keke Palmer, and Sandra Oh, and which premiered at the Toronto Film Festival before a wide release by Lionsgate.
Aziz Ansari was born in Columbia, South Carolina, and was raised in Bennettsville, South Carolina, by his mother, Fatima (obstetrician/gynecologist) and father, Shuokath (gastroenterologist), who are Tamil Muslims. Ansari has a younger brother, Aniz, who is a writer, editor, and visual artist. Ansari attended and graduated from Marlboro Academy in Bennettsville and also attended the South Carolina Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics.
