The Roxy Theatre, located at 320 20th Street West in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, is a historic cinema that opened on August 28, 1930. Designed by Winnipeg architect Max Zev Blankstein, the theatre was commissioned by Nathan Rothstein of Rothstein Theatres. It was constructed at a cost of $73,000 and is one of the few remaining atmospheric theatres in Canada, featuring a Spanish Villa style interior designed to evoke the ambiance of a quaint Spanish village, complete with balconies, windows, and towers. The ceiling is painted dark blue with twinkling lights, simulating a night sky. The Roxy was Saskatoon’s first air-conditioned building and was built to accommodate sound pictures, marking a significant transition in cinematic history. After closing in 1995, the theatre was purchased and restored by Rainbow and Magic Lantern Cinemas, reopening in 2005. Today, it continues to operate as a cinema and performance space, showcasing first-run art and alternative movies, as well as hosting concerts, lectures, and community events.
