Elk Rapids Cinema, at 205 River Street in Elk Rapids, Michigan, is a beautifully preserved single-screen cinema housed in an Art‑Deco building that first opened in 1940.The theater is famous for its striking black‑light ceiling mural, said to be the largest of its kind in the world, painted by Robert Spinner and magnificently lit by custom ultraviolet lighting. Over the years, the cinema has been updated—new seats, modern projection and sound—while maintaining its historic charm. After nearly five decades under longtime owner Joe Yuchasz, it was acquired in 2023 by the Chalfonte Foundation, which intends not only to continue film showings but also to expand community‑cultural programming, including plans for additional performance, meeting, museum, and possibly even radio station spaces. The cinema operates with affordable pricing, has become a central gathering place in downtown Elk Rapids, and remains a beloved landmark combining nostalgia, art, and community.
