Located within the historic Detroit Institute of Arts, the Detroit Film Theatre (DFT) has been a beloved cinematic institution since 1974, showcasing a curated lineup of global, contemporary, classic, and visionary films. Housed in a beautifully preserved 1,000-seat auditorium from 1927, the DFT is dedicated to celebrating film as an essential art form, offering audiences a rich cultural experience that spans decades and continents. In partnership with local and international organizations—and often aligning with DIA exhibitions—the DFT fosters artistic discovery and community dialogue through thoughtfully programmed screenings and events. Now in its 50th year, the DFT continues to connect audiences to the world of film in a way that honors tradition while embracing innovation.
