The Alamo Theatre in Bucksport, Maine, is a historic gem that has stood since 1916, originally built as a purpose-built cinema by O.J. and May Hussey. Over the decades, it has served not only as a beloved movie house but also hosted live performances, community events, and even functioned as a grocery store, health clinic, and rental shop during its dormant years. In 1992, the Northeast Historic Film (NHF), a nonprofit dedicated to preserving New England’s moving-image history, acquired the long-abandoned building and began an extensive restoration. Today, the Alamo is a vibrant community cinema equipped with modern projection and sound, while also housing NHF’s archives, study center, and climate-controlled Conservation Center. Beyond screening Hollywood films and local productions, it serves as a cultural hub hosting festivals, weddings, meetings, and educational programs. As the oldest still-operational, purpose-built cinema in Maine, the Alamo Theatre embodies a unique blend of historic preservation and contemporary engagement with film.
