Based in Barcelona, its main shareholders and management team have many years of experience in the profession, having developed their careers in companies such as Grupo Planeta, Filmax or Notro Films/Vértice 360, from where they launched in our market such diverse titles as Solas (Benito Zambrano), El Pianista (Polanski), No sos vos, soy yo (Taratuto) or La niebla (Frank Darabont). Precisely the majority of the shareholders of Notro Films and almost all of its professional team constitute the operating core of A CONTRACORRIENTE. Specialising in European and independent films with the potential to reach a wide audience, A CONTRACORRIENTE FILMS is currently the leading Spanish distributor in the theatrical market, with over 20 million viewers and a box office take of over 21 million euros in 2018. Its most popular titles include Intocable, Dios mío ¿qué te hizo?, Handia, Los Seductores, Pequeñas mentiras sin importante, Profesor Lazhar, Bienvenidos al Sur, El hombre de al lado and Jane Eyre. Its catalogue of over 1,500 titles, which it manages in theatres, platforms, on television and in the Blu-Ray domestic format, also includes some of the most outstanding classics of all time, by masters such as Federico Fellini (La Dolce Vita), Jean Renoir (Boudou Saved from the Waters), Ingmar Bergman (Fanny and Alexander), Jacques Tati (My Uncle) and Yasujiro Ozu (Tokyo Stories). Films that marked an era such as Children of Paradise, Rififi, Don Camillo, The Ninth Gate, Taxi Express, The Piano, Cinema Paradiso or Babette’s Feast, titles that A CONTRACORRIENTE successfully re-released in theatres, have been recovered by the company for distribution on DVD and television. The company has also specialised in segments as diverse as family films, with hits such as Ballerina, Mia and the White Lion or the Spanish film The Best Summer of My Life, or art documentaries. In this genre, it has strategic agreements with the most important production companies in the world, with highly successful films about figures such as Leonardo, Michelangelo, Goya, Van Gogh or Picasso, as well as galleries and museums such as El Prado, whose film on the occasion of its Second Centenary (Painters and Kings of the Prado) starred Jeremy Irons. A CONTRACORRIENTEA CONTRACORRIENTE also distributes its own films, such as Ciudadano Ilustre, winner of the Goya and the big winner of the Platino Awards in 2017; La librería, by Isabel Coixet, which was seen by more than half a million spectators and for which it won the Goya for Best Film, among other awards; and Litus, by Dani de la Orden. Since 2014, A CONTRACORRIENTE also owns and programmes movie theatres, becoming the main shareholder of the Cines Conde Duque and Verdi chains, with a strong presence in Barcelona and Madrid. The emblematic Cine Verdi in Barcelona hosts the Barcelona-Sant Jordi International Film Festival (BCN Film Fest) every year, whose exponential growth has made it the main festival in the country specialising in the Cinema-History-Literature triangle.
