For over 80 years, 20th Century was one of the major American film studios. It was formed in 1935 as Twentieth Century-Fox Film Corporation by the merger of Fox Film and Twentieth Century Pictures, and one of the original “Big Five” among eight majors of Hollywood’s Golden Age. 20th Century Fox played a significant role in shaping the entertainment industry, responsible for many iconic movies and groundbreaking achievements.
The studio is now owned by The Walt Disney Studios, operating as the Twentieth Century Studios division of Disney Entertainment, which is in turn a division within The Walt Disney Company. Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures distributes and markets films produced by 20th Century Studios in theatrical markets.
The studio has produced many commercially successful film series such as the first six Star Wars films, X-Men, Ice Age, Avatar, and Planet of the Apes as well as numerous television shows such as The Simpsons. The studio’s archive includes many movies which have won the Academy Award for Best Picture including “Avatar” – which held the title as the highest grossing movie of all time from 2009-2019 – and “The Sound of Music” – which received five Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director.
