The Golden Globes could turn into Golden Goblins now that Time’s Up, 100+ publicists, Netflix & Amazon have condemned their promises to reform.
The plans HFPA just presented for dealing with diversity & financial propriety were denounced as “window-dressing platitudes” by Time’s Up. HFPA bylaws require a vote at the next general membership meeting – but that’s not until July!
July may be too late to help the GG. The publicists’ thumbs down vote is a crisis because if they don’t deliver their clients, there’s no GG for NBC to telecast. Friday night Netflix & Amazon Studios both cut off working with the HFPA – a life threatening loss. At the 78th GG, Netflix led the pack with 22 film noms & Amazon was second with 7 nods. If major studios follow the streamers’ lead, game’s over.
Meanwhile, publicists’ A-List clients are already saying they won’t campaign for GG, do HFPA press conferences and hit the red carpet to party at the Beverly Hilton. As one publicist suggested: “The smartest and most responsible and ethical thing to do is put it on hold.” A 2022 hiatus might be the only way to keep from killing the goose that lays the Golden Globes.
