During the first U.K. answer-print screening an actual unexplained voice muttered “Get out” on the optical track. Kubrick kept the reel, spliced it into the 146-min cut and never told Warner Bros. – projectionists still report the whisper on certain 35 mm prints.
The hedge-lion attack was originally hedge-wolves, but preview cards said “wolves are cliché”. Kubrick had the greens team reshoot the maze topiary overnight; you can still spot a wolf silhouette in one background matte painting he forgot to replace.
Actor Joe Turkel flew in from L.A., but Kubrick made him tend bar at the Hilton London for three nights (in costume) so his pours would look muscle-memorised. The gold-foil J&B label was aged with full-strength whisky so the glass would sweat realistically under set-lights.
70,000 gallons of water, Kodak photo-flo wetting agent (for viscosity) and oxygenated dessert dye so it oxidised from bright red to crimson as it poured—no CGI colour-tweak needed in 1980.
