Plot Summary

Emad and Rana are a married couple who both work in the theatre, currently starring in a production of Death of a Salesman by Arthur Miller, with Emad portraying Willy Loman and Rana playing Linda. Emad is also a popular instructor at a local school, where the youth joke about him being a "salesman." One night, their apartment begins to collapse and they flee the building with the other residents. Knowing they need another place to live, their fellow actor Babak secures another apartment for them, where a woman has recently moved out, although she left in a hurry abandoning numerous belongings. The couple moves into the apartment and places the previous owner's belongings outside. One night, Rana is home alone and begins bathing. When Emad returns, he finds she is missing and the bathroom is covered with blood. He rushes to the hospital, where he is informed by his neighbours about his wife's condition and is told to change the apartment's locks. It becomes apparent that Rana has not had an accident, but has been assaulted by an intruder, to whom she opened the door using the intercom thinking it was Emad returning home. Emad also learns from neighbours that the previous tenant was a prostitute who had conflicts with her clients.Rana returns home, but suffers from trauma and is reluctant to go to the police. She does not bathe, fearing to go into the bathroom again, and in the middle of a performance, breaks down in tears and leaves the stage. Although she does not remember the face of her attacker, Emad finds the culprit left his car keys, which he matches to a pick-up parked outside. The attacker also left behind a mobile phone and money which Rana purchased groceries with, thinking Emad had left it for her. Emad increasingly blames Babak for hiding the truth about the former tenant. After he hears a loving message from Babak on the previous tenant's answering machine, he calls Babak's character Charley a degenerate in the midst of a performance, although this is not in Miller's script.Finally, Emad turns to one of his students, whose father used to work for the police. He is able to trace the truck to a man named Majid. He pretends to need a mover to lure Majid to their now empty old apartment, but Majid's prospective father-in-law arrives instead. Gradually, it becomes apparent the older man was himself the intruder, though he denies attacking Rana, implying he simply startled her. Emad calls the old man's family to the apartment, and locks him in a small room to wait, intending to reveal his true character to them all. When he opens the room the old man appears to be having heart trouble and Emad calls Rana in a panic. When Rana learns what Emad intends, she says it will be over between them if he pursues his revenge.When the family arrives they believe they have been called to a medical emergency, thanking Emad for saving his life. Just before they leave, Emad insists on settling his account with the old man in private, returning the money he had left after Rana's assault. Unseen by the family, Emad slaps the old man, who then collapses as he is leaving with his family, and they call an ambulance. Rana and Emad return to the theatre together.

Storyline

Forced to leave their collapsing house, Ranaa and Emad, an Iranian couple who happen to be performers rehearsing for Arthur Miller's "Death of a Salesman" rent a new apartment from one of their fellow performers. Unaware of the fact that the previous tenant had been a woman of ill repute having many clients, they settle down. By a nasty turn of events one of the clients pays a visit to the apartment one night while Ranaa is alone at home taking a bath and the aftermath turns the peaceful life of the couple upside down. — Hossein sr Against the backdrop of the theatrical adaptation of Arthur Miller 's Death of a Salesman (1985) , Emad and Rana relocate to a small flat, after the forced evacuation of their apartment in a condemned building in Tehran. Then, when Emad decides to stay late for a rehearsal leaving Rana at home all alone, tragedy strikes. During the following two weeks, in the aftermath of that horrible night, the couple's faith and love, the very bond that keeps it all together, will be put to the test. Now, Rana's life is defined by fear, while Emad has to live with the unbearable burden of guilt, and of course, the theatrical play must go on at any cost. But, in the end, what does a monster look like? Above all, if revenge is only a human trait, what does it take to confront it? — Nick Riganas In Tehran, married Emad and Rana Etesami are both theater actors, they who have the leads in their theater company's latest offering, "Death of a Salesman". Emad also teaches literature in a boys' school as a day job, he who is well liked by his students who know about his night job. Emad and Rana are not only forced immediately to evacuate their apartment building but move on the spur of the moment when the building in which they live shows signs of major structural damage. One of their acquaintances offers them a small apartment that he owns, the most recent tenant who has just moved out, but many of whose personal possessions still remain probably to be forever unclaimed. When Rana is alone at the new apartment, an incident occurs which is related to the old tenant: Rana buzzes into the building who she believes is Emad, only to find it is someone who was coming to see the previous tenant. What happens traumatizes Rana, who is injured in the process. She also never does see the person in question, but only knows that he too probably injured himself, most specifically cut his foot. Rana and Emad decide not to file a report with the police. However, the incident affects Rana's psyche which in turn affects how she relates to Emad as a man and husband. In turn, Emad becomes consumed with finding the man, whose flight from the scene includes he leaving his car keys in the apartment with his vehicle parked in the building's parking lot. Emad's focus on this matter leads to him not being able to sleep and affects his work life. The incident threatens to tear Rana and Emad's marriage apart, which may be further exacerbated if they have differing views on how best to handle the situation. — Huggo After their flat becomes damaged, and Rana, a young couple living in Tehran, Iran, must move into another apartment.
