Plot Summary

Scarlet is a 2025 Japanese animated fantasy adventure film written and directed by Mamoru Hosoda and produced by Studio Chizu, in collaboration with Sony Pictures and Nippon Television. Inspired in part by William Shakespeare’s Hamlet, the story centres on Princess Scarlet, a fierce warrior whose world is upended when her beloved father is killed in a brutal coup by her power-hungry uncle, Claudius. Consumed by grief and rage, she embarks on a dangerous quest for retribution, only to be fatally wounded and transported to the mysterious Otherworld — a liminal space between life and death where time and souls intertwine. In the Otherworld, Scarlet meets Hijiri, a young man from the present whose ideals of healing and forgiveness challenge her desire for vengeance. Together they face undead warriors, shifting landscapes, and the looming presence of her father’s killer. With lush, detailed animation that blends fantastical elements with emotional depth, the film explores Scarlet’s journey to reconcile loss, identity, and the possibility of a future beyond rage. Scarlet premiered internationally at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival in September 2025 and was released in Japan on November 21, 2025. It reached North American audiences with an IMAX run starting on February 6, 2026, and a wider theatrical release on February 13, 2026, featuring both subtitled and dubbed versions.
