12/16 will bring two brand-name sequels that are safe bets to attract audiences. WB/DC’s action-adventure fantasy AQUAMAN AND THE LOST KINGDOM is from James Wan, whose 2018 AQUAMAN cost $160M & did $1.1B/WW. Jason Momoa (pictured), Yahya Abdul-Mateen II & Nicole Kidman are back.
Disney/20th’s sci-fi action-adventure AVATAR 2 is from James Cameron, whose 2009 AVATAR cost $237M & did $2.8B/WW. Sigourney Weaver & Zoe Saldana return, + Kate Winslet & Michelle Yeoh.
Universal/Illumination’s animated comedy adventure SUPER MARIO BROS. hits theatres Wed., 12/21 & should be a magnet for families — just as U/I’s animated SING 2 is right now. SMB’s the series’ first theatrical title since a 1993 live-action film.
12/23 is the debut day for an untitled Disney/20th film & for Sony/Compelling Pictures’ bio-drama I WANNA DANCE WITH SOMEBODY. Naomi Ackie (STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER) stars as Whitney Houston.
