Timo Tjahjanto (birthname: Timothy Tjahjanto) is an Indonesian, German-born filmmaker who rose to fame in the Indonesian film industry with directing, writing, and producing partner Kimo Stamboel (billed as “The Mo Brothers”) with the Indonesian horror features Macabre (2009)—based on the Mo Brothers’ short film, Dara (2007); the Japanese-Indonesian horror-thriller, Killers (2014), which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival; and Headshot (2016), starring Iko Uwais and Chelsea Islan.
Tjahjanto was the solo director/writer of the supernatural horror movie May the Devil Take You (2018), co-starring Chelsea Islan, Ray Sahetapy, and Shareefa Daanish, premiering at the Venice Film Festival and released worldwide by Netflix to a $3 million gross, and in the same year,
Tjahjanto was director/writer/producer of the Hong Kong 1980s cinema-inspired action movie, The Night Comes for Us (2018), co-starring Joe Taslim, Iko Uwais, and Julie Estelle, and also released by Netflix. Tjahjanto was director/writer/producer of the Indonesian-produced sequel, May the Devil Take You Too (2020), reuniting with star Islan, and released by Shudder to a $2.6 million return.
Tjahjanto returned to his home at Netflix Studios as director/writer/producer of The Big 4 (2022), described as “The Three Stooges with bazookas” and co-starring Abimana Aryasatya, Putri Marino and Lutesha, and then Tjahjanto continued with streamer Netflix as director/writer/producer of the Indonesian crime thriller, The Shadow Strays (2024), starring Aurora Ribero and premiering at the Toronto Film Festival’s Midnight Madness section.
Tjahjanto directed his first Hollywood movie, the action sequel Nobody 2 (2025), with Bob Odenkirk (also co-producing with partner Marc Provissiero) returning in the starring role of government assassin Hutch Mansell, and with John Ortiz, Connie Nielsen, RZA, Colin Hanks, Christopher Lloyd, and Sharon Stone, and released wide by Universal Pictures.
Tjahjanto continued in sequel mode as director/writer/producer of the third movie in the series, May the Devil Take You 3 (date to be announced), again starring Chelsea Islan, and then Tjahjanto returned to U.S.-based moviemaking with the Miramax-backed sequel, The Beekeeper 2 (date to be announced), with returning star/producer Jason Statham and co-written by Kurt Wimmer and Umair Aleem. Tjahjanto has served as producer or executive producer on Hit & Run (2019), as well as on the Indonesian movie, Perempuan Bergaun Merah (2022).
