Steffan Haars’s (birthname: Steffen Gerardus Adrianus Haars) name has become synonymous with twisted, deliberately tasteless Dutch comedy, first with his long-running sketch show, DePulpShow (2002), and then with the TV series, New Kids on the Block (2007-2009), which he transferred to the big screen as co-director/co-writer/co-producer of New Kids Turbo (2010) with creative partner Flip van der Kuil, and which starred Huub Smit, Tim Haars and Wesley van Gaalen and grossed over $18 million worldwide.
Haars, again with Van der Kuil, was co-director/co-writer/co-producer of the zombie-themed sequel, New Kids Nitro (2011), with the same cast repeating their roles (including Haars himself and Van der Kuil), and delivering a box-office return of $9.4 million.
Haars, with co-creator Van der Kuil, stepped away from the New Kids universe as co-director/co-writer/co-producer of the Dutch gross-out rom-com, Bro’s Before Ho’s (2013), co-starring Sylvia Hoeks, Tim Haars, Daniel Arends, Huub Smit, and Raymond Thiry, grossing $3.8 million in mainly Benelux territories.
Haars, under a shared brand credit with Van der Kuil (“Steffen & Flip”), was co-director/co-writer/co-producer of the movie-themed comedy, Ron Goossens, Low Budget Stuntman (2017), co-starring Tim Haars, Bo Maerten, Henry Van Loon, Michiel Romeyn and Dennie Christian, and returning nearly $1.6 million for Kaan Holland Film.
Steffen Haars continued the Steffen & Flip partnership as co-director/co-writer/co-producer of the Dutch-produced horror comedy, Krazy House (2024), marking the filmmaking pair’s first collaboration in English and with comic actor Nick Frost, who starred with Alicia Silverstone and Jan Bijvoet.
Haars continued with writer/star Frost in another family-in-peril horror comedy, Get Away (2024), Haars’ first movie which he didn’t write, produce, or make with Flip van der Kuil, and which also features Aisling Bea and Sebastian Croft, and which premiered at Fantastic Fest before a release by XYZ Films.
Steffen Haars was born and raised in Maaskantje, Netherlands, by his parents. Haars has a younger brother, Tim (sketch comic actor.) Haars studied directing at the Netherlands Film and Television Academy.
