Priyanka Chopra Jonas was born and raised in Jamshedpur, India by her parents Capt. Dr. Ashok Chopra and Dr. Madhu Chopra, are both Indian Army physicians. However, because of her parents’ professions, her family moved around the Indian subcontinent many times and to many different areas, from the north in Ladakh to Delhi, Lucknow, and Bareilly, which Chopra Jonas considers her hometown. Chopra Jonas attended grade schools in India until she moved to the U.S. to live with her aunt and attended schools in Newton, Massachusetts, the New York City borough of Queens, and Cedar Rapids, Iowa. In Newton, Chopra Jonas performed in theater and choral settings. Chopra Jonas returned to India for her 12th-grade studies at the Army Public School in Bareilly.
After graduating, Chopra Jonas emerged as a very successful beauty pageant contestant, winning the Miss India World title, and then, in 2000, she was crowned Miss World and Miss World Continental Queen of Beauty—Asia & Oceania; she was only the fifth Indian contestant to win Miss World.
